The trail begins below to help all you tinhorns to know the Internal Rules of ElfWest.
Now don't be steppin out o' line...we don't go for that in these parts!.
Internal Rules of this Alternate Universe:
Elves do get married and call their lifemates "husband" or "wife," but their sexuality is similar to as it is in the original series. Elves can have more than one husband or wife, of either sex, and their marriages are generally what we would describe as "open marriages."
Recognition is something these elves don't fully understand. It's a kind of deep urge. Love-at-first-sightish. You catch another's eye, and suddenly you're thinking about them all the time. Eventually you just give up and give in. If not... well, sexual frustration has been known to result in tension and even illness (which is one of the reasons they have "open marriages" and polygamy). The Elves don't talk about it much, even among themselves, and an elf who experiences it may not have much of an idea what's happening, or why.
Troll marriage is also as in the original series. Trolls, blatantly and shamelessly, marry for money.
Human marriages are what we would expect in the Old West.
Elvin "magic" powers are latent. An elf with healing skills would be drawn to medicine; a tree-shaper would be drawn to the forest-- but they wouldn't know why. Under stress or other factors, an elf's powers might suddenly manifest, but they'd be shocked/disturbed and keep it a secret from others, try to deny it happened or explain it away.
As for sending, all or most elves could send, and receive sendings, if they knew they could-- some actually do send, in emotionally intense moments, and especially to those closest to them.
However, there is a small secret sect who seek "the ancient powers." Known as the Seekers of the Lost Arts, these elves send fluently and are committed to developing other, less universal powers. Savah is the leader; Winnowill belongs to the sect, but has her own secrets even from them. . .
